What does each status on the pass mean?
Updated September 2026
The card carries one word in its Status slot, from a vocabulary of sixteen. Six of them are live states of the phone, seven are ways a term or an arrangement finished, and three name a process that is running. Only four ever ask anything of you, and when one does the card also says what the one useful act is, in words, above the day count.
One word, and the whole card agrees with it
The Status slot on the front of the pass is a single word. Every other part of the card is derived from the same state, so nothing on it can disagree with that word: the sky behind the card, the colour of the labels, whether a line of advice appears in the middle, and which rows survive on the back are all decided together.
Three moods exist. A calm card is starlit navy with slate labels and no advice line. An attention card warms its labels to amber and gains a middle line naming the fact and the one act that helps. An ended card turns to first light, drops the running count, and keeps almost nothing else.
The word is chosen in one place and in a fixed order of precedence. A finished arrangement outranks everything, then a finished term, then a phone whose protection is actually down, then a process such as an exit or a handover, then the plain live state. That ordering is why a phone that stopped confirming its blocks shows that rather than a handover it happens to be in the middle of: protection is the bigger fact.
The sixteen words
| Protected | The blocks are on and their phone has confirmed it recently. Nothing is needed from you. |
|---|---|
| Checking in | Their phone is confirming its protection right now. Brief and normal. |
| Not confirmed | Their phone has not confirmed protection for a while. Often a dead battery or airplane mode. If it stays this way, a caring message is worth more than an alarm. |
| Protection off | The protection is not running. That usually means a permission was revoked. This is the moment the pass exists for: check in with them, kindly. |
| Subscription lapsed | Their subscription ran out, so protection may end soon. A gentle nudge to renew can help. |
| Protection at risk | The apps are still sealed, but their phone could not prove the betting site block is on. The middle line reads Web protection may be off, and checking in is the act that helps. |
| Term complete | They finished the full term they committed to. The blocks still hold until they choose what comes next. This one is worth celebrating. |
| Protection ended | The term is over and the blocks are off. Nothing is needed from you, and the card stops changing. |
| Ended | You are no longer part of their circle, so the card is finished. It keeps this one word for a week and then stops answering. |
| Expired | Your card outlived its own explanation, with no specific reason recorded. It is rare. It keeps this one word for a week and then stops answering. |
| Left | You stepped away or down from the role yourself. It keeps this one word for a week and then stops answering. |
| Handed over | A handover to someone else completed, and this was your card. It keeps this one word for a week and then stops answering. |
| Closed | They closed their Fold'em account, so the card is finished. It keeps this one word for a week and then stops answering. |
| Setting up | The key was just accepted and the card is finishing its own setup. It only shows for a short time before it settles into a normal status. |
| Handover | A handover to your successor is underway. You keep your full authority, including keeping the lock on any exit request, until it takes effect. |
| Ending | An exit was approved, and the wait before protection ends has started. Nothing more is needed from you. |
Five of those words end the card rather than describe a state. Ended, Expired, Left, Handed over and Closed each mean the arrangement is finished; the card keeps its word for seven days and then stops answering altogether. That week exists so a goodbye is readable rather than arriving as a card that suddenly fails.
The faces you will actually see
-
Protected, the ordinary face
Slate labels, a starlit sky, the day count, and a tip to turn the card over. The moon on the right reports how far they are toward their next milestone. Nothing is asked of you.

Protected
-
Not confirmed, a phone that has gone quiet
The labels turn amber and a middle line appears: Blocks not confirmed, then Check in with them by name. Their phone reports in when it is used and on a background wake no sooner than four hours apart, so a few quiet hours are ordinary and a full day of silence is the threshold that turns this word on.

Not confirmed
-
Protection off, the one that matters most
The middle line reads Protection is off, then the same act: check in with them. This is not a slow report like the one above; it is the phone saying that the blocks are not running, which almost always means the Screen Time permission was turned off in iOS Settings.

Protection off
-
Subscription lapsed, where the act is different
The one attention face whose advice is not to check in. The middle line reads Cover lapsed, and the act is to remind them to renew. The facts row carries the date cover ends, so you know how long there is.

Subscription lapsed
-
Protection ended, first light
The sky becomes dawn, the running count disappears because there is nothing left to count, and one fact remains: the term ended. Nothing is asked of you and the card stops changing.

Protection ended
What this does not do
A status word reports the state of the blocks on one iPhone. None of the sixteen tells you whether the person gambled, because a second phone, a desktop, a betting shop and cash are all outside what an app on that phone can see.
The word also carries no timestamp of its own. It is true as of the moment the card was generated, which is what the Refreshed row on the back is for. A calm word on a card that has not been refreshed in days is not the same claim as a calm word on a card refreshed an hour ago, and only the back can tell you which one you are holding.
