Where they answer
You can share your invitation as a link, as your code, or as a QR code they scan, and all three lead to the same place: your invitation, inside the Fold’em app on their iPhone. If the app is installed, the link opens it there. If it is not, the link opens a short page with your code and a Get Fold’em button, which takes them to the App Store; once they have installed it and signed in, they tap the link again or enter your code in the app.
The page they land on names you and what you are asking. For the key, it says you asked them to hold your key and that ending your protection takes their yes, and the buttons are Hold the key and Not now. For support, it asks whether they will be there for you, lists what they would see, and offers Accept support invitation and Not now. Their Not now sends nothing.
Why it needs their own account
A keyholder is the person who answers if you ask to end protection, so the key can only go to a real person who is signed in. Fold’em checks the link or the code on the server, and their yes is only an ask: nothing connects until you accept it in your own app. Opening a link, a matching name or an email address is never taken as an acceptance.
Holding your key does not mean buying anything. A supporter account is free and does not need protection of its own.

Their yes becomes an ask, and their page then says it was sent and is waiting for you. You get a notification that they want to connect, and their row comes first in Your circle on People, in red: Asked to hold your key or Asked to support you.

You accept, or it closes
Tapping the row opens their ask, headed with their name and what it means, then Accept and Not now. The moment you accept, the server records them as your keyholder or your supporter, and not a moment before. Not now closes the ask, and any notice they get says only that it closed. An ask you leave unanswered closes on its own after 14 days.

A decline never strands you
You were already without a keyholder while their ask was waiting: the server marks you as having one at the moment you accept and not before. So a Not now on either side, or an ask that runs out, takes nothing away. It leaves you where you were, and ending protection takes the path for somebody with no keyholder until somebody accepts. Nothing about your block changes.
After you tap Not now, the same person cannot ask you again for 7 days. A supporter’s ask that closes is quieter still: they hold no key, so it touches nothing else, not your way to end protection and not any wait.
What this does not do
Accepting does not give them a way into your phone. It does not give them a button that agrees to end your protection: the only agreement Fold’em recognises is a code they show you, meant to be shown in person, which you scan with your own phone. It does not let them see which apps or sites you blocked, anything you browse, any amount of money, or anything you typed except a note you add when you ask your keyholder to end a Lockdown sooner. Fold’em never sends anybody a text message. A closed ask cannot be reopened, so connecting with that person later means a new ask from your link.
Write to us and a person reads it. We answer within two working days, and we would rather hear the question twice than not at all.
