Fold'em versus other gambling blockers

There are four ways a blocker can work on an iPhone and every product is one or more of them: a DNS answer, a VPN profile, a Safari content blocker, and a Screen Time shield. Which one a product uses decides what it can reach and how it comes off, and most of the differences people argue about are differences between those four rather than between brands. So this page compares the mechanisms rather than the names, in one table, dated, with Fold'em in a column of its own carrying its own ways out. No competitor is named anywhere on it, deliberately, and the last section says how to check every row for yourself.

Why this page names nobody

A comparison page written by one of the products is worth roughly nothing, and everybody reading one knows it. The version that is worth something states the mechanism, states what the mechanism provably cannot reach, and lets you check it against any product's own pages in ten minutes.

So the columns here are mechanism classes rather than brands. That is a deliberate editorial rule and it costs us the search traffic that goes to brand comparisons, which is the point: a page that exists to rank against a name ends up arguing about the name. The facts behind these columns were read from thirteen products' own websites and App Store listings on 2 September 2026, and every one of them is a page you can open yourself.

The four mechanisms, and what each one is

A DNS answer. The phone is pointed at a chosen resolver, and the resolver refuses to give an address for a name on its list, so the page never loads. It is name based, so it reaches everything that looks a name up, in any browser and inside any app. It is also blind to an app that carries its own addresses or pins its own resolver, which is why a native app can keep working while every browser is covered.

A VPN profile. A local profile routes traffic through a filter on the device. Same breadth as the answer above and the same blindness at the app layer; one product built on it documents the outcome plainly, saying the app itself may still open while its content does not load.

A Safari content blocker. An extension that refuses addresses inside Safari and inside Apple's own embedded browser. It reaches no third party browser and no app's own traffic, which is a narrow slice of the problem sold, in more than one listing, as a whole answer.

A Screen Time shield. Apple's Family Controls framework: an app granted the permission can seal apps and whole categories, filter addresses inside Safari, and refuse app deletion device wide. It is the only one of the four that stops a native app from opening at all.

The grid below is the shape of those four, before any product is involved.

Which layer each blocking mechanism reaches A grid of four rows and five columns. The table

The four layer rows are the same four as the picture. The six under them are the ones that decide whether a blocker is a commitment or a preference. Cells are short on purpose and the sections below carry the wording: If sealed means a browser is only covered when you seal that browser as an app, Apple's own means the embedded browser Apple provides and no other, and Withdraw, or reset means the Screen Time permission or the passcode behind it. The three rows that actually decide it

The four layer rows tell you what a product can reach. These three tell you whether it will still be there next month.

How it comes off. Every blocker on iOS is removable by the person holding the phone, because iOS gives no app the power to prevent it, and the honest question is never whether but how long and who finds out. For three of the four classes the answer is under a minute, silently, in Settings. That is not a scandal; it is what a profile is. It only becomes a problem when the product is sold as unremovable, and several are.

Whether the undo can be bought. Of the thirteen products whose listings were read, one sells an emergency unlock as a consumable purchase at $19.99, priced at roughly double its own monthly subscription. The person most likely to buy it is a person in an urge state, using the same payment method they gamble with, at the exact moment the block is doing its job. No comparison page in this market carries this row, and it is the single most decision relevant fact on this page.

Who else is involved. Most products that advertise accountability ship a notification. One of the better rated ones states the design in its own marketing as a feature: the sponsor is alerted, not asked. That is a real difference from a person who can refuse, and it is worth knowing which one you are buying, because a notification arriving after the fact changes nothing about the fact.

Fold'em's column, read the same way

A comparison table where the last column has no holes in it is an advertisement in a table's clothes, so here are the holes. There are four routes out of a Fold'em block and none of them needs anybody's permission.

Delete the app. An optional restriction stops apps being deleted while it holds, and it is off unless you turn it on, because iOS makes it device wide: while it holds no app on the phone can be deleted, ours included. Turning it off opens a 72 hour wait on the server, and that wait is written into what your keyholder can see rather than mailed to them. With it off, deleting Fold'em removes the settings Fold'em applied. It does not end the term, because the term lives on the server, so signing in again brings it back with its end date, the day count unbroken, your keyholder and the lock.

Let the subscription lapse. When the plan ends a window of 72 hours opens, and at the end of it the server releases the block whatever the term said. It is the fastest exit the product has. Your keyholder is sent a letter carrying the date.

Use a second phone. Fold'em holds one handset. A tablet, a laptop, a shop and cash are all outside it and always will be.

Switch the DNS setting off. It lives in iOS Settings and only iOS Settings can move it. It is also the one weakening Fold'em does not report: no email, and on a phone whose apps are sealed nothing changes on a keyholder's pass either. Only a phone that sealed the web shield alone shows it there.

What the table's last row buys, against all four of those, is time and a witness rather than prevention. Withdrawing Screen Time freezes the earned figures, shows the days without it as holes in the run, and turns a keyholder's card to Protection off within seconds; 24 hours with no reading of any kind turns it to Not confirmed. What Fold'em cannot block is the same list in the product's own words.

How to check any of this yourself

Three habits settle most of it without trusting a page like this one.

Open the product's own site and look for the word that names the mechanism. If DNS, VPN, Screen Time or content blocker appears nowhere on it, that absence is the finding: of thirteen products read, the mechanism was named on the product's own website for three.

Scroll the App Store listing to the in app purchase list, which no marketing page controls. A consumable sitting beside the subscriptions is worth reading the name of.

Then read the removal page, which every honest product has, and ask what it costs and who is told.
