Blocking betting sites on iOS: Safari, Screen Time, and the loopholes

Deleting the sportsbook apps feels decisive, until you remember every one of them runs fine as a website. bet365 never even needed an app. Here are the real options for blocking betting sites on an iPhone, and the hole each one leaves.
Option 1. Screen Time's "Limit Adult Websites"
Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → Web Content. Apple's adult filter catches many gambling domains, and you can add specific sites to "Never Allow". The catches: coverage is patchy for regional bookmakers, new domains appear weekly, and whoever holds the Screen Time passcode can lift it, and that is you unless you have handed it over.
Option 2. DNS filtering
Services like NextDNS or AdGuard DNS apply a gambling blocklist device-wide, with community lists (the well-known Hagezi gambling list tracks tens of thousands of domains). Two loopholes: the configuration profile can be deleted in Settings in under a minute, and apps using their own DNS or hard-coded endpoints skip it entirely.
Option 3. An OS level web filter you cannot quietly remove
The Screen Time framework lets a self-exclusion app install a web content filter that blocks chosen domains in Safari at the OS level, alongside the app shields. The difference from options 1 and 2 is not the blocking. It is the lock around the blocking:
- The filter is part of a term you committed to, one to twelve months, and not a setting you can toggle.
- The app enforcing it can optionally refuse its own deletion while locked, if the person chooses that.
- Switching protection off alerts your accountability partner within minutes.
